I was thrilled by my friend Edson's invitation for me to be part of his creative project. Just for the sake of joy and creativity … no other agenda.
I've started this composition from the loop (GI-8) created by Edson. As it became a full piece , I named it Asa Pacific. The low "E" that resonates from his drum gave me the idea to use it as a pedal tone while I'd bring different rhythms and harmonic textures over it . I started with a simple "baião", a rhythm from Brazil's Northeast, and added a concertina, (from the accordion family"). That led me to a nostalgic melody with sort of a minor tone where I quoted a famous folk melody from Brazil's music called Asa Branca….. from there into an interlude where the loop stops and the whole song floats until it bursts into a more intense rhythm and harmonic scenario. The piano takes over carrying the dissonance and syncopations over the same dronelike pedal point in E. There are a number of delays which add to the mood of the song. Hope you'll enjoy it . It was a lot of fun to put it all together.... This time I went for it all on my own but.......... I'll be writing another piece open to collaborate with other musicians here on the site :O)
